What's New ?... THE OFFICIAL BARACK OBAMA INAUGURAL MEDAL.  I WAS HONORED TO HAVE HAD MY DESIGN CHOSEN TO APPEAR ON THE REVERSE OF THIS HISTORIC MEDAL.  MARC MELLON, A RENOWNED SCULPTOR FROM CONNECTICUT DESIGNED AND SCULPTED THE OBVERSE.

MARC'S WEBSITE IS WWW.MELLONSTUDIO.COM

THE SYMBOLISM OF THE SPLIT WREATH BELOW THE INAUGURAL SEAL: THE LAUREL LEAVES SYMBOLIZE VICTORY; THE OAK LEAVES SYMBOLIZE WISDOM AND STRENGTH; THEY ARE TIED TOGETHER BELOW THE SCROLL CARTOUCHE WITH A RIBBON THAT SYMBOLIZES UNITY.

On March 5,6,7, and 8th, 2008, I had the pleasure of painting a mural with my son Patrick, and my grandson Rylan, for the Orchard Hill Elementary School in Medford, Oregon.  Rylan attends Orchard Hill school, and my granddaughter Alyssa will go there soon.  The school teachers, principal, and PTA were especially hospitable, and anticipated our every need.

The children were very supportive, and each child in the school participated by painting the wall with a sky blue preparation coat.  The mural depicts a hawk...their school icon, clutching a banner with their school motto.  The background scenery..... (with which I took a lot of artistic license), is an exaggerated hawk's eye view of the Rogue Valley showing the Table Rocks, Rogue River, pear orchards, Roxy Ann Peak, and Mount McLoughlin in the distance.  The hawk is an immature phase red-tail.

The mural was painted by Patrick, myself, and Rylan.  The women in our lives were very supportive as always, behind the scenes.  Pictured above with me is my favorite daughter-in-law, Shelly.....my son Patrick....grandson Rylan...granddaughter Alyssa.

Pictured below with me are my wife Margaret, who always helps me greatly, and Grandchildren Rylan and Alyssa.

Not really new, as I created this plaster model back in 2003 to commemorate Jefferson's orders to Lewis and Clark prior to their expedition.  It has been on display in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment State Park in Ilwaco, WA ever since.  Now that the Bicentennial of the Corps of Discovery's journey is over, I thought I'd bring it home to the studio.

In 2006, I was commissioned by the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio, to re-design their yearly inductee medallion.  In many instances, inventors are unsung heroes, as their discoveries make our everyday lives easier, and their medical breakthroughs have saved millions of lives.  My hat is off to them.

I rarely model in plasteline, preferring to carve directly in the negative plaster, but this medal called for extreme relief of half an inch, so I modeled the double portrait.

Pictured below is the obverse of the 3" high relief bronze medal itself, and a photo of the induction ceremony held at the National Inventors Hall of Fame on May 5, 2007 that my wife, Margaret and I attended.

I encourage everyone who is able, to visit the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, OH.  Their website is www.INVENT.ORG at the Hall of Fame, you will see their, extensive collection of invention prototypes, and information about the greatest inventors in history.  Thomas Edison is recognized as America's most prolific inventor, and Lincoln was a great believer in the patent process, as indicated by his quote which circles the medal.  Abraham Lincoln actually invented a mechanical system that helped ships that run aground, to escape and float back to shore.

Pictured below is a first day cover cachet that was authorized by the U.S. Mint and USPS to commemorate the issue of the Golden Dollar.  It featured one of the coins, and had on the front, a pictorial cancellation utilizing the coin's design, half of which I was responsible for, Glenna Goodacre the other.

I recently designed four pictorial postal cancellations for separate Lewis and Clark events, and had these added to the inside of the cachet. Now it bears a total of five pictorial cancellations, counting the cover, and six cancelled stamps.

I am extremely honored to have been asked to design these pictorial cancellations, as I was to have had my design chosen to appear on reverse of the Golden Dollar, itself. I would like to think that as I was the designer of both the coin, and the postmarks, make these very rare and unique pieces. Ten of these were created, and bear one cancellation from the original issue, one from Fort Clatsop, in Astoria, OR., two cancellations from Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, WA and  one from Long Beach, WA

As long as we're talking about golden dollar coins, there is a website that features small dollar coins, and it is the most informative site that I have seen concerning these size coins.  It belongs to Mike Wallace, and the link is www.SmallDollars.com

If you are looking for information on Susan B. Anthony dollars, The original Golden Dollar, Presidential Dollars, or possible future small dollars, I strongly recommend that you visit Mike's site.

The small picture below on the left, is the graphic design I created for a 38" diameter illuminated panel that Margaret transferred to stained glass.   Also shown is the panel itself, that we donated and installed in the Beatty Valley Gospel Mission Church, which is located here in Beatty not far from our studio.

The design is titled "CREATION", and encompasses the period of time that God spent creating Heaven and Earth.  Between God's hands, creation begins with the upper right hand section's depiction of the world without form, and God said "Let there be light!"   Continuing counterclockwise, each day's work is chronicled by section as described in Genesis: The creation of Heaven; the forming of earth and seeds to germinate into life; the separation of day and night; all manner of fish and fowl; the creation of all other beasts, with man given dominion in a bountiful world.  The seventh day is the day God rested, looked over what he had done, saw it was good, and blessed it with his love.  This day is symbolized by the heart at the center.

Pictured below is the medallic version of the stained glass design, "CREATION" next to it on the right, is the other side of the pendant featuring our, savior, Jesus Christ.  This work was finished in 2008.  I wanted the likeness of Jesus to be reminiscent of early Christian descriptions of how he appeared, not the idealized modern versions.

Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery

These are photos of a finished 3" medal that I designed and sculpted specifically for the descendants of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery, to honor all the permanent members of that Corps. It has the names of all the permanent members, including Captain Lewis' Newfoundland dog, Seaman, and a star to honor each. The descendents held a reunion on August 13-15th, 2004 in Astoria, OR. This medal was made available only to registered descendants. Due to it's historic importance, I offered a copy to the Smithsonian Institution for their National medal collection. The Clatsop County Genealogical Society of Astoria, OR sponsored the descendants reunion.
